52^nd National Championship Tournament

AWBA Members and Friends,

On behalf of our Paulding County Southern Open sponsors, the National Paralyzed Veterans of America, and other sponsorships, I extend this invitation to attend our annual National Championship Tournament.  The tournament committee has worked extremely hard to make this week enjoyable for each of you.  I am honored to host the 52^nd National, being held in Marietta, GA.  Hopefully, you will have time to do some sightseeing, renew past acquaintances, and create new friendships during the week of bowling and social activities.

Brunswick Zone will be our new host for this year’s event.  It is a facility with 40 synthetic lanes and we are receiving tremendous support from its staff.  We hope the entries will exceed 75 competitors.  With this number, there will be no need to bowl shifts as we have done in the past.  If you haven’t received your entry form, go to www.awba.org for all the information.

We are using the Country Inn and Suites as our host hotel (770-222-0456)- when calling mention our block for AWBA Wheelchair Tournament.  There are a number of handicap rooms in other motels with very affordable rates.  You can find those in the information provided on the web page.  We fully expect that these hotels/motels will treat each of you with great service and southern hospitality.

I recommend that each of you make your reservations at your earliest convenience, using the motel information on the web site.  Most chains offered accommodations in the area and we recommend you check those out using the specific website offered by them on the internet.  We have a number of fine restaurants near in the area as well for your convenience as well.

The tournament committee is not handling transportation to the hotel or bowling center.  If you plan on traveling by air to this area, you may fly into Atlanta.  Also, it will be helpful if those of you who are driving would consider buddy rides back and forth from the lanes for some of your transportation challenged friends.

As tournament director, I hope that each of you consider joining us this year.  Ever better, bring a bowling friend along with you.  It would be great to have a large turnout and make this one of our most memorable celebrations for our 52^nd Annual National Championship Tournament.

Well, the 1^st Annual Texas Shootout is in the books!!!!!  What a great turnout we had with over 31 bowlers coming from all over the country to participate in 3 days of fun loving enjoyment with some great bowling.  City View Lanes in Ft. Worth was a wonderful facility to host such an event and their staff was most accommodating in providing us with great lanes, great food, and some warm Texas hospitality.  And the weather was typical March in Texas with wild flowers in full bloom, crystal clear blue skies and no humidity!!!!!  The Up and Down was a huge success with over 27 teams filling the center.  We were honor to have 6 USBC notables join us for the event which our bowlers along with the general public  witnessed the way we should all bowl.  The end results were extremely close with only 7 pins separating first to third place.  Everyone had a wonderful time.  Doubles competition began on Friday morning with 15 teams entered into the event.  Don Porpora and Paul Cook took the Doubles honor defeating Kavin Monroe and David Nelson.  Mark Shepard and Peter Arbollo came in third.  Singles competition was, as usual, very competitive in all Division.  In the “B” Division, we had a first time winner and brand new member from Florida, Millie Irizarry, take the honors.  She fought through the tears in accepting the trophy.  She is going to be a wonderful addition to the AWBA.  You will enjoy every minute you spend with her.  In “A” Division, Wayne Webber outlasted Paul Cook to take the crown back to Florida.  And in the Scratch Division, Eddy Hutchens defeated the Birthday Boy, Roger Templar, to take the honors to Colorado.

Shawn and I would like to extend our thanks to those members that made donations to the 1^st Texas Shootout.  Each of you know who you are but without those donations, this event would have never happened.  We would also like to thank Nancy Roberts and Mary Ann Templar for their assistance.  We would like to thank the sponsors that were so gracious to support this event and the AWBA.  Finally we would like to express our sincere thanks to Onie Ryan and Mae and David Zaunbrecher for scoring an event for the first time along with Candice, Shawn Beam’s Mom.  We really don’t know how we could have pulled this off without their dedication to the AWBA.  Thank you so very much.

We hope you enjoyed all the activities as much as we enjoyed hosting this event.  We are in hopes that this will be the first of many minus the scoring glitch.  Thanks to each of you for your attendance and your friendship.  It is truly treasured.

AWBA Newsletter-December 2012

The BAY AREA PVA Doubles event opened the tournament on Friday afternoon with Stacy and Harvey Clowers taking the championship.  Stacy and Harvey are the only couple we have competing within the AWBA and a big “Congrats” goes out to the two of them for their great bowling.  Friday evening a great time was had by all in the Up/Down event.  Eddy Hutchens and his great team took top honors but the real winners were those that participated and made new friends from the Bakersfield area.  A big thanks goes out to those individuals who participated.

We wish to thank our major sponsors for this event for without them, putting on an event such as this would be very difficult.

Myself being effected by CMT and a member of the AWBA helped organize this special bowling event for the Tampa Bay Area CMT Support group, to bring awareness of CMT and to introduce those utilizing or confined to a wheelchair that they too could enjoy the great sport and social aspect of bowling.
